Bevor wir die nächsten Gutachten online stellen, an dieser Stelle noch ein Hinweise auf drei Bücher, die sich den Thema Gesundheit, Studien und Darstellung in den Medien widmen. Sie sind zum Teil in Englisch verfasst, stehen dafür aber kostenlos als pdf zur Verfügung.
Die drei Bücher richten sich zwar vornehmlich an Patienten oder Menschen, die sich generell für Gesundheitsthemen interessieren (ebenso wie Mediziner) und sind eigentlich keine speziellen Ratgeber für Journalisten. Doch sie vermitteln etwa Wissen zum Thema Studien, Statistik und Aussagen zur Wirksamkeit von Therapien und Medikamenten u.ä. Damit bieten sie eben auch hilfreiche und wichtige Informationen für Autoren, die über Gesundheit und Medizin schreiben.
Ben Goldacre, Autor, Blogger und Kolumnist des Guardian (“Bad Science“) schreibt im Vorwort zur englischen Neuauflage (2011) von Testing Treatments (dt. Medizin auf dem Prüfstand) einen zentralen Satz, der zu allen drei Büchern passt und den auch Medizinjournalistin immer im Hinterkopf haben sollten:
“Medicine shouldn’t be about authority, and the most important question anyone can ask on any claim is simple: ‘how do you know?’ This book is about the answer to that question.”
Im Folgenden gebe ich kurz Auszüge aus den ‘Klappentexten’ der Bücher wider. Erfreulicherweise ist Testing Treatments auch auf Deutsch erhältlich, es ist eine Übersetzung der 1. Auflage aus dem Jahr 2006.
